Another Dad and Daughter Weekend

E is heading up to Katoomba this arvo for the weekend (women's convention), so it'll be me and the girls until Sunday arvo. Should be interesting. I'm not too nervous about it this time, I'm actually kind of looking forward to it. Got a few fun things planned. Coloured popcorn will probably come into proceedings. And swimming. And the fire-pit.

The two things I need to concentrate on, to be perfectly honest, are one, to work at staying gentle and patient, especially towards the end of the day when everyone's tired. I'm prone to getting shouty and harsh.

And two, to be flexible with my plans, and be prepared to take things as they come. For example, I'm picturing tonight once the girls go down, to watch the footy and then my new Conan the Destroyer DVD. I know, perfect night or what. But the kids may take a while to go down. A long while. So I can't get all angsty that their eating into My Plans. Because I am their Dad, and that is first on the list.

It may sound silly that I have to specify these things, as they probably sound blatantly obvious. But, these are points where I fail over and over, and that's why I need to continually remind myself of them.

He who fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge. Proverbs 14:26

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love. 1 Cor 16:13-14

Had a night like that last night mate and to be honest it went rather smoothly....except around dinner time. Claire lets the little rat get away with a lot more mess. Me? Can't stand for food to be played with and chucked round...Anyways. I had to take that into consideration and come back to the clean up after bedtime.
But a weis bar, a chocolate wheaton and Men in Black 3 and all was good in the world!
I look at his expression when I start to get angsty and just think of the fact he has no (not yet anyways) idea of the way his behaviour makes me feel or react. That pulls me up straight away. I don't want any anger or ill feeling to plant itself in any part of his inner voice.

not silly at all. I tell myself both those things every day.
