Clarice Beckett

It's strange that it has taken me so long to write a post about Clarice Beckett. When I was thinking about writing a blog, my main reason for wanting one was that I wanted to talk about Clarice Beckett, an Australian painter who died in 1935 .

She is my all-time favourite painter, and I have been frustrated to find that there are no good websites about her life and work, and not really any good books about her either. It seems crazy to me, to think that there was this absolute genius, and yet she has gotten so little recognition. So I thought if you can't find a website, make your own.

As it turns out, this has not turned out to be a Beckett blog, but I still will do regular posts about her, perhaps as a test-run for starting a whole other blog, solely about her work. It would be a good'n. I have a cool title for it and everything. I can't see it getting a big readership, but it will just be a labour of love.

hi, I haven't been able to get down to the exhibition but am hoping to soon. She really is a wonderful, unique painter.

Sadly, there is no real definitive book about her life and work. The nearest thing would be a short book written in the 70's, but it is very hard to find. If you live near Campsie, they have a copy in their library. The details about the book are here--

Thanks for stopping by.

I'm also amazed that there isn't a decent or recent book of her paintings, she is easily one of Australia's best painters.

There's an english painter called Ben McLaughlin, very good also. I though you were him for a moment.

Hi Korg,

Yeah, I agree, Beckett was one of, if not the best painter to ever come out of Australia. I am going to be starting up a blog completely dedicated to her paintings, and info about her. It'll be up and running soon if you want to check it out.

ps- yeah I discovered the other Ben McLaughlin one day while I was browsing art books in the library. I was very taken aback-- 'huh? They've made a book about my paintings without me knowing?!'
