The Whistler

The bus was quiet, everyone in their own worlds. Then a mobile ringtone rung out, breaking the silence, to the tune of Mission Impossible. Bum bum bum-bum bum bum. A few sighs as the culprit fumbled about deep in her giant handbag. A quick press of a button, and then silence once more.

And then a very soft whistled note from a man a couple of seats from me. Just a couple of odd notes here and there from the Mission Impossible theme, but barely audible. He had that tune cranking in his head, but was trying to stifle his whistle as best he could. And then silence once more.

And then, throwing all caution to the wind, he could restrain himself no more, and burst headlong into whistling the theme once again; this time out loud, and with gusto. No holds barred, and with his eyes closed so he could enjoy his own sweet music without being encumbered by the glares of his peers. What a champ.
