I've made the risky and controversial decision to not attend my work Christmas party this year, and I feel happy and relieved that I don't have it looming. No silly costume to work out. No late night at some seedy place far from home.
Our Christmas parties used to be pretty good. We'd start early in the day, and have a flash sit-down meal and stuff. These days it's all about finger food. And I'm not talking party pies either.
One down side of not going is that I miss the opportunity of winning prizes. I have won some sweet prizes in previous years. I won a Blackberry (which is still in it's box if anyone wants one cheap), and also a massive TV. I might add that I won the TV in a dance-off. Oh, the glory days.

Funny how christmas parties can bring looming dread for some! Ours used to be really bad - lots of drinking and no food. Last year, the ratio was balanced out a little more evenly. I always leave early though, before it turns into a messy afternoon.
I have been invited to six Christmas parties so far - all by companies and major agencies I am in contact with. All boozy affairs. All in swanky places with scary dress codes. This is shady ground. I really really don't want to go to any of them, but I'm kind of obliged by my work to go (in a "if you want to succeed as a journalist and get stories, you'll be there and drink, dammit" kind of way).
A lot of pressure if you ask me, for someone who doesn't even like big parties very much!
oh man.. I feel for you Soph. Six parties?! That's craziness. I hate those things that you are 'expected' to go to. Things that are meant to be fun things, but there's this unspoken thing behind it --join in and have fun or else!
We solved the problem of our woeful work chrissy parties by putting together a band - hence the birth of THE GONKS. Now 4 years later everyone complains if we aren't playing.
Nice one, Goldy. way to be your own saviour:)
