Anyone know anything about cameras?
We are planning on buying a new one, but don't really know whee to start. We were thinking along the lines of those ones with the biggish lens that look a bit like the old SLR's. We want something that takes a nice photo, but not too pricey (under $500).
Any thoughts? Good brands?

a couple of years ago, I bought a Fujifilm Finepix S5200. It was a "best buy" rating by Consumer Reports magazine. The review was that, for a non-SLR camera, it has a lot of features. I find it easy to use as a simple point and shoot, but also able to do much more if I get out the user manual and fiddle a bit.
They have a newer model now, but I imagine it would be similar in quality. And of course I don't know if the same model numbers are in Australia...
Benno, you know me. Mr bloody deliberator..I have had 3 Canons and also a fuji (like traceys) and a coulple of olympus's and bought kel a sony. i keep going back to the canon, for overall picture quality and ease of use ( I don't know what aperture does!) and value for money. The sony is pretty good but a little tricky with downloads and pic transfer. (they had to use a different chord and plug system, didn't they?)..
So...have a good look at the canons, they vary from 89 bucks up to a miwwion!. I saw an SLR style one advertised this morning somewhere for just under five hundgy...Get lots a OPTICAL zoom and over 10 MegaPixels and you fix any bad photo...
Give us a buzz if you want a hand.
thanks Tracey and Pete for the info.. I'll kep all that in mind
