It's like opening a statement with "no offense but"... when you're not talking about the problems with Manly this year in grammatically incorrect slang...
Then there's, "This is going to sound horrible but..." - makes me wonder why people bother finishing the sentence - if it's going to sound horrible or offensive, then don't continue! The thing is that often these openers are used by people who are afraid that whatever they say will be taken the wrong way so they try to minimise their words (and possibly themselves) before they say anything. Often I'd be less likely to be offended if they just said it. Then I'd have the opportunity to judge the statement on it's own merit rather than already having my hackles up.
