For some reason, my access to blogs and websites at work is getting more and more restricted. Some of my favourite blogs are now being blocked, and lots of the pictures on other blogs (including this one) are just coming up as blank squares with a red cross in the corner.
This hurts.
Nathan's blog, which is now completely blocked to me, has now taken on a different air. If you can't have something, you want it all the more. Now Nathan is like that bad kid in primary school that you're not allowed to play with, because he's a bad influence.
Sure, he's trying to get you to jig class and smoke behind the toilet block, but if you actually tried to get to know him, you'd see he has a heart of gold.
Curse these restrictions!

Have you asked why?
You could probably make a case for full access for research purposes.
At work we have a blanket restriction on anything with the word 'sex' in the URL, which means I can't look at a site advertising Sussex, and I can't look at HippocampusExtenstions.
But I could go look at NekkidPeopleOnline.
It's arbitrary, and treating you like you are a child. If you aren't getting your work done, fair enough, but if you are they are saying they don't trust you to work without watching your every movement, and that's never a fun place to be.
I totally agree. I actually get to work an hour early just for blogging purposes, so it's not like I'm just wanting to slack off.
I guess I'm scared of bringing it up, because I feel like if I mentioned the word 'blog' I wouldn't have a leg to stand on.
But the whole 'research purpose' is valid, and a good idea, because I have to do a stack of Google image searches for my job, and oftenget blocked when doing so.
I'd just ask them why things are being shut down?
See if they are doing it because they don't trust their employees to do their work. Maybe suggest that if someone is being a problem user, instead of using a passive aggressive approach, just speaking to the person and saying "hey, can you not download so much/go to dodgy websites/abuse your internet privileges)"...
I'm not surprised that they've blocked my blog - it has probably led to a significant downturn in productivity with your colleagues.
Have you tried Google Reader? They probably won't block RSS feeds - you can also subscribe to get my posts by email...
Nathan - Ben is afraid of Google reader. He keeps saying he doesn't want to try it (despite the fact that it would allow him to keep track of all his blogs in less time meaning he would only need to get to work half an hour earlier, instead of a full hour :))
Also - unrelated, but I didn't have an email for you:
1) How do you pronounce Eutychus? Is it "Yoo-ti-kus" or "You-tyke-us". My guess is the former.
2) Learn to f*ing spell. You might appreciate (obviously there is a swear warning on that one... and check out his article #3 - below the fold).
I blame Nathan.
All your employer has probably done is researched what is taking up the most bandwidth, and my suggestion high up on the list would be the megabyte -sapping work of art that is st-eutychus.com.
Ben, you're the one abusing the system!
Rodeo - I'd go with option one.
And I'll probably post that link in the next day or so - the email address is in my footer - but to save you looking it's nm campbell gmail com
Ben, it's the beginning of the end. Now you know why I am on the fringes of the blog circle of love - I can't access blogs to comment and give hugs and back pats and so forth. I use google reader, but even in google reader the images are just squares with the red x, because they don't feed in if they are coming from blogs etc (drives me crazy when people's blogs are largely visual). Welcome to my world (and it wasn't always this way - once upon I lived in this bliss where we could see youtube).
But, a secret, I can't load in pics at work in blogger anymore, but I can still access www.blogger.com to write posts in there. How I respond to comments is a long and convoluted process ...
Just had to come back here to click that little box for follow-up comments, otherwise every time I remember to check I can't get in to those either ...
Ali - I use Google Reader and have no problem with getting pictures. Maybe we have different settings.
Hmm. If I use google reader at home, it's fine. But if I open it here at work, if a particular blog is blocked to me here (for direct access - which includes most blogspot blogs) then chances are the pictures will be blocked also.
Yeah it feels like the beginning of the end to me, Ali. It's all suddenly getting a bit too hard. I can't imagine myself reading a post ion the day, and then at home at night, going 'oh hang on, I should turn on the computer and write a three word comment on that post I read this morning'.
