Does anyone read that free afternoon newspaper, mX?
I have this love/hate relationship with it. I have very little time for personal reading, and always tell myself, 'now on the train trip home today, you're gonna read the big, hefty and poignant novel that you lug around with you in your backpack every day.' But then as I go through the turnstiles at the station, my resolve disappears and I grab a free mX.
I then spend the entire journey reading celeb tweets about so-and-so's new poodle, articles about the cracks forming between Brad and Ange, who's hotter between Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, about Lil' Wayne's impending stint in the bighouse.
I get to the end and want to slap myself for having read it cover to cover, and vow that tomorrow will be different. But it never is.
Curse you, mX and the sick strangle-hold you have over my afternoons. Well, I'm going to try and abstain for a week, starting today, to see what I can accomplish without it. I'll let you know of my progress and whether I fall off the wagon.

I've started picking it up for the sudoku and crossword.
The rest of it is tripe.
Well, the crossword is too, but it's less tripey than the rest of the paper.
I used to read the section where people write messages to people they think are cute on the train, asking for dates.
Rodeo- just be wary of the slippery slope. I pick it up 'just to check out the tv guide' and wind up reading about Lindsey Lohan.
Soph- yeah, me too. Those comments are hilariously vague, like they subconsciously don't really want to be found. Eg. "To the blonde girl with ears and a nose at Town Hall last year- I think you're hot".
Ben, I fall into exactly the same trap.
I think it's just a big wasted opportunity for MX... what impact they could have by including thoughtful pieces, instead of the gossip trash that's currently featured.
I wish you well in your quest. I'll be joining you.
Cool, Christine- we'll be like the Sam and Frodo of commuting.
awesome... :)
MX is dreadful (just thinking of all the trees wasted reporting on some inane starlets tweets).
But yeah, I do pick it up (or have it forced on my by the scary newspaper people).
But my train ride is long enough that I can skim through and still get a good 20mins of novel reading in.
Definitely sounds like you need the expulsive power of a new affection. I recommend taking an old cereal box in your bag. It will provide far more stimulating reading than mX, and is lighter than your novel.
I'm going to start a band called Sick Strangle-hold
Bringing a quality book (especially of the "worthy but dull" variety) is just asking for trouble because I'll pick MX everytime due to being so brain dead after work!
So I used to just grab a copy of a food magazine like delicious or Good Taste to read on the way home. Easy to read, lots of ideas about what to cook for dinner and if you don't feel like reading, you can just look at the pictures or scan the recipes :)
I first came across MX when visiting my sister in Melbourne years ago. It has now made it to Brisbane as I saw from when I was last in town.
Yeah, I'd read it, but I spend time on a train doing puzzles as much as reading novels or text books. I'm also a sucker for free newspapers.
Yep, it's in Brisbane now too. So I've switched back to driving to work now ... problem solved.
Amy-I'd be scary too if I had to hand out newspapers to annoying hurrying commuters
Stuat- you're on to something
Ben- thanks for stopping by. I'd come and see you play, for sure.
Soph- that's exactly my issue, being brain dead. I can't bring myself to read my novel after work. This sucks.
Laetitia- yeah, I read that the 'm' actually stands for Melbourne, where it strted.
Maso- I like your drastic measures
