I think you are generalising a lot about girls...I've never wanted to learn the cello!

me neither! now the flute, that's a different story...

Of course, but a few exceptions doth not disprove yon rule.

oh for goodness' sake! the cello?! girls?! not this one either!!

Wow I'm wilting from the scorn.

But you see, all the 97% of other woman who are cellists at heart are just quietly nodding, saying 'wow, he knows me so well, it's like he's been reading my diary'. These people won't comment here, because they are stunned by my perceptiveness.

It's like if you said 'things guys like', and said 'talking a heck of a lot about bike riding', I'd say 'yes totally', even though I have never spoken about bikes, and never will on principal.

A minority must accept his minorityness.

OK then, I'm stunned at your perceptiveness. I always wanted to learn the cello. The piano that I did learn is probably more useful though (just less portable...and no, a portable keyboard is no substitute for the real thing).
My brother in law learned the cello at school and then gave it up. I was shocked to hear this story. How could he have thrown an opportunity like that away?? My nieces (his kids) now learn violin...a way too screechy instrument in my opinion. Cellos rule!

Aha!

Thanks Karen, and for bravely going against The Sisterhood Of Disbelievers.

Violin's great but, only about three people out of every four million that try to learn it manage to not sound like a small dying animal.

*sigh* ok, I feel like I have to own up to it now...I've always loved the cello and took lessons as an adult. But Ben, cello can also sound like a dying animal...

Ben McLaughlin said...

But it's a different kind of dying animal.. more a OOOOOOOOO which is easier on the ear than a high pitched eeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

I want to learn the cello.

My dream.
The cello.
Gracefully playing. Deep rich tones.
I would love to learn.
I think I fear the process. The OOOOOOOOOOOOOs and screechiness.
I will dream on.
You win. Yes, I am a cellist in my heart. But a Practical Pianist to all who know me.

I sense a pattern. You really want to learn cello, but it's too outlandish, so you settle for the more sensible, practical option.

Rachel yearns to play the cello.
