Trish Johns Hits The Nail On The Head

I don't want to just jump on the bandwagon and have a rant about the Matthew Johns thing, but I just wanted to share something I read this morning that stood out to me. It was from the ACA interview last night with Johns and his wife, and his wife Trish said--

'His greatest crime is actually being unfaithful to me as his wife and I feel that it's only for me to judge him.'

I think you could argue round and round about whether or not that night in 2002 was consensual, but my take would be that the only one true innocent party in the whole situation was his wife, and I agree with her, that his infidelity to her was his greatest crime.

I don't think this has been reflected in the media coverage, where the chief victim has been the girl identified as 'Clare', and the head demon, Johns.

Hmmm - I don't think I can agree with you there, Ben. Trish Johns' point is not that infidelity is worse than rape - I don't think any woman would say that - it is that her husband is guilty of one and not the other. If he is guilty of both, to say that his infidelity is worse than the rape he committed unavoidably minimises the appalling, lifelong effects of sexual assault.

Hi Joanna,

I'm not really certain that we disagree, actually. Maybe what I didn't make clear in my post was that (from what I know) I didn't see it to be rape, but rather that to some extent it was consensual.

If this is the case, then I do think his infidelity was the worst thing, and that his wife was the only innocent victim.

That said, obviouslythe woman involved was treated terribly, and what happened was disgusting and degrading to all involved. But that doesn't make it rape or neccessarily assault.

To be honest, I'm regretting posting about this. Maybe I should have bitten my tongue rather than tossing in my two cents.

I just watched online the Four Corners report, (which I hadn't seen) and I guess when you get to see things at closer hand (and see the devastation of the girl) it seems cold and futile of me, someone uninvolved to make calls on whether or not it was rape/consensual/assault, or whatever, and to make some theoretical call about what someone else's greatest sin is.

Maybe the best thing is to be one person who doesn't have two cents to add.

I don't believe for a second that a 19 years old girl wants to have sex with 12 men, no way!

I don't either, Riitta but it sounds like she did go back to the room with two blokes. I know 2 is very different to 12. But it's also very different to 1.
