Connections, Please

I'm after a bit of advice.

Frustratingly, we can't get internet connection at our new place. It worked for about a day, but since then, nothing.

We are with Unwired, and have one of those contraption thingies. It's been okay, but has always been a bit temperamental, regularly disconnecting for no apparent reason.

We are wanting to get something else, so we can get connected asap, but I am very clueless about all this stuff, and don't really know what options there are, let alone what the best options are.

E was talking about one of those USB thumb drive ones that you see people use with their laptops... are they good?

Any other ideas??

Cobbs, at the end of the day, the further you move away from the big name providers, ie OPTUS, telstra et al, the more issues you are going to have with your service. Plain and simple. I am sure Unwired is cheap as but hows that working out for you?
Optus are doing a 49.95 deal at the moment and they will give you 120 GB downloads at STUPID fast speed. Just get them on the phone and screw them a little, they will deliver and install for free...
You can mess around with usb modems and the like but get the thing installed and its done...Too much faffing about.
Hope that helps.

Thanks mate. As I said, I'm clueless, so excuse the dumb questions--

When you say 'install' what does that look like? Do you get some kind of contraption? I'm guessing you don't.

And if you got a USB modem, none of those would be a big name provider would they?

Amelia uses one of those thumb drive connections - hers is from 3. It works pretty well, but the connectivity is sloowwww. Cheap, though.

Install as in, come and 'install' the modem in your place.
yes, you will get a modem. Probably one that will cater to wireless needs but should plug into your home rig via ethernet or some such thing.
The usb thing is poop and slow, as Craig has mentioned.

Benny, I have a usb modem from virgin. $35/month for 5GB. Slows down if I go over that (I usually don't). Works for me. Does slow down sometimes in peak periods (6-8pm). Just plug in and away you go.

Optus are evil. Telstra worse.
Not sure how you would go with getting free install etc with them especially given you say you are moving in 6 months and they are probably going to want 1-2 year contracts for any sort of 'throw in modem, free install deals'.
A friend uses the vodaphone plugin thingy, was slow at first but okay now after some yelling to customer service.
I have iinet, and I can't rave about it enough. But don't know if they do more portable options.
