One day E's dad booked E and I into a day spa without us knowing. It was cool, we've never done anything like that before. I gotta say though, call me neurotic, but I found it all a little stressful. Another one of these places where there is all this unspoken etiquette that I don't know about.
We were led through a maze of dark corridors, and quick instructions were given. E was to go to such and such a place, and me somewhere else. I was then left alone, and had no idea what I was meant to do. I had a gown, but was I to keep my undies on, or go starkers under that? I need to be told these things.
Eventually a masseuse came and found me, and was all flustered because we were losing valuable massage time. She whisked me down more dark corridors to a little room, had me lie on a bed thing, and told me to relax. Easy for you to say, Jocelyn.
Anyhow, she then worked a bit of her magic on me, and it was actually really nice. But when she was massaging she was acting like I was a bit of a hopeless case, that I was too far gone. She kept going, Hmmm. Tsk. Hmmmm. Half an hour is not going to do it. You are really in a bad way here. Hmmm. Tsk. Sort of like some one coming to inspect your house and finding the structural beams ridden with termites. Hmmm. Is this supposed to make me relaxed?
Jocelyn said what would really help is for me to do Sun Salutes A and B, a few times a day. I said, yes that seemed like a good idea, but didn't have the heart to ask what the heck a Sun Salute was. Anyway, later on it got better, when I met up with E again, and we pooled, spa'd, sauna'd and steamroomed together for a hour or so. I reckon now that I know more of the rules I could enjoy it more next time. And maybe in the meantime I should take Jocelyn's advice and go and do me some Sun Salutes, of the A and B variety.

There's a DVD that I lent to someone once.......They never even looked at it though.
Had a whole section on Sun salutes...and Downward dogs...
Very good for you ya know. Would YOU like to borrow it?
Sure. Is that you, Jocelyn?
haha...sun salutes (or salutations) is a yoga move, involving a lot of stretching and breathing.
She probably just wanted you to book another session and pay more money, like when hairdressers tsk tsk over your colours or dry hair!
yeah, that's what I reckon, Soph. She even gave me her personal card and asked where I was staying, saying she could come round before I go. Still, it gives me a good excuse to go and get an expensive massage rather than my usual dodge 15 minute one.
ps- why not just say breathe and stretch then, rather than 'salute the sun'
Well...if you are asking...
The reason for the names are purely to identify the individual postures amongst a plethora of holds and movements that DO in fact go a long way to improving your physical (and sometimes mental) wellbeing.
If you are asking, that is...
Yeah, breathe and stretch, that'll do it...
That bloody woman is a ripoff. How dare she recommend these outlandish ideas, that you couldn't possibly do on your own, at your leisure, when you have time, without her expert guidance!!!
Oh, hang on.....you can.
We'll have to get you round to our place Ben, the friendly trainer on the Wii fit will not only talk you through the moves of the Sun Salutation, but he does it with you on screen, while you copy his moves on your wii fit board!Come on over, its great fun :)
I find I spend most my time during a massage trying to relax and 'enjoy' the experience.
"ok, hmm...interesting application of pressure, should I tell her it's too soft/hard? - no wouldn't want to hurt her feelings, time is passing, you need to make the most of this, relax, stop thinking about all those other things, clear the mind, hmm I wish I'd had something to eat first, what am I going to do after I leave here?, sshh don't think about that stuff now - relax, oh I wish I hadn't just washed my hair - now I've got oil in it, ok now, I seriously need to relax and enjoy, starting from now...oh, times over."
Hey Jen-- that sounds like a much better option: excercising while playing computer games! Count me in. I remember I felt pretty good after I did the boxing one at your place-- I suddenly had some hot cannons going:)
Trish--ha that's funny. I am exactly the same as that. Another big stress is putting your face in the wrong position in that hole thing, and then it feels too late to move. You're a bit crooked so one of your eyeballs is being squashed, and there's a steady stream of drool slipping out one side of yr mouth. Also, you suddenly realise there is an itch on yr cheek, but you cant get to it. And RELAX they say..
