Well, last night was really cool. I feel really pleased that I went, and look forward to going back.Gotta say though, my first impressions were 'what the heck have I just walked into?'. It reminded me of the Stonecutters in The Simpsons- some weird secret society with special handshakes.
I didn't know, but Toastmasters is this hugely structured thing. There was a 'Madam Chairman' who formally opened the meeting by whacking a gavel on the table. People clapped after each person spoke, and said things like 'thank you, table-topics master'. And everyone sat around like a boardroom meeting. There was a strict schedule, timed to the minute. At 8:37, such and such was scheduled to give a speech. At 8:39, they would get feedback. Each person got up, and spoke behind a lectern.

But, you know what? I really liked it. I loved seeing these people so positive and constructive about improving themselves and their speech, and at how encouraging they were with each other. And, hey, I don't mind a bit of structure. At least then stuff gets done.
Looking forward to going back, and eventually preparing and giving a speech.

i didn't do a speech myself (they are all pre-planned) but I stood up and answered a 'topical' question.
I remember thinking my first toastmasters meeting was formal too. Then as time progressed and I attended more meetings I discovered that the formal roles really disguise speaking opportunities.
If someone is trying to overcome a fear of something like speaking then give them opportunities in every meeting to speak, hence the production of a lot of meeting roles with specific tasks that allow people to speak.
