I'm the slowest reader in all of mankind, and am still reading a book I started before Christmas. But, I'm aiming to finish this week, and then I'm going to try Jane Eyre. I'm looking forward to it.
To be honest with you, I keep thinking 'hey I should totally do a book group with this', but don't worry, I've learnt my lesson!

I know the story already pretty well from watching a few film adaptations.
The wife upstairs and her end. It's awful.
Aw, come on Al, that's the major draw-card for me.
That's like saying Wuthering Heights would be good if Cathy comes back as a ghost..no, Wuthering Heights is good BECAUSE Cathy comes back as a cool ghost.
Take away the creepy stuff like mad women in the attic, and you're just left with Jane Austen.
I gave it to Rachel when we were first going out. We were probably about 19. I was tentative but keen to impress. I'd heard it was a good story and I wanted to give my young love some classic romance to read so that she would think I was a sensitive kinda guy.
She didn't like it. So I read it and cringed my way through it.
I'd probably enjoy it now if I read it for the first time.
I love Jane Eyre.
Do Middlemarch after you finish Jane.
Heh, nice wooing work, Al! For my wooing, on my first date with E we traded our favourite books. I lent her Cloudstreet, which she read in about a week. She leant me Wuthering Heights, which I read with great frustration, over many, many months!
Simone, E suggested the same thing. I looked on our shelf, and picked out Jane Eyre, Middle March, and North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, and asked E for her recommendations.
She said she didn't remember anything from North and South, so I crossed that one of the list. And then E showed me the width of Middlemarch (about 10 cm) compared to the width of Jane Eyre(about 2cm), and said, 'hm, maybe start with J.E. and work up to Middlemarch..
Middlemarch is superb, but the first half is hard work.
