No Photos

I just heard that the US government have decided not to release the photograph of Bin Laden's body, the reasoning being that it would be too inflammatory.I'm sure this will only fan the flame for the conspiracy theorists out there who think the whole thing is some kind of hoax or lie.

To be honest, I'd like to see a photo. But probably more out of morbid fascination than for needing to see proof. And I don't think I should necessarily be granted that, so I'm okay about some sort of authority deciding whether or not I get to.

I'm sure motives will be questioned, but for the sake of safety, and for not wanting to wave the picture in front of the noses of his followers, who frankly are probably as dangerous as he was, I'm okay with that.

What I'd like to happen, is that a whole bunch of leaders from around the world go to some private viewing of the pictures, and then statements are made to confirm it. I'd be satisfied with that.

What do you think?

mmmmm....this is a bit tricky.
I am always a cynic when it come to the operation of the US. I can't see a lie lasting very long if that is the case but....Its all a bit dodgey.
The throwing of the body into the sea. (???)
No photos.
Lots of hooplah.
Reeks of US cover up to me.
Something is awry.

I would also like that, show the photos to some trustworthy third parties. But keep them off the internet. If that's possible. Although I don't think we need photo proof at all, the proof will really be Bin Laden out of business. The US couldn't fake his death cos he would just laugh at them from youtube. Silence is as good as proof of death.

They're damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they do then they inflame insurgents; if they don't then they inspire the conspiracy theorists.

They would have been much better off if they had brought him in alive and tried him, especially as he was unarmed.

Difficult. Claire has a point, it sounds dodgy, but I think Laetitia is right. They're damned either way. Do I want to see a picture of a man with half his head blown off? No, not really. Do I think it should be made available? Yes. Maybe like Ben said, to world leaders, but that still wouldn't stop the conspiracy theories. But they publicised other pictures of confirmed kills and didn't they even TELEVISE the execution of Saddam Hussein?

Traxy - I think it was the Iraqi gov't who tried Saddam Hussein and showed footage of his execution.

And I'm willing to accept that bin Laden is dead without a photo as it would be easy enough for him to send a new video to Al Jazeera showing that he's a live if he were.

There will always be conspiracy theorists (think 'Elvis is alive', 'the USA filmed the moon landing in the Arizona desert' and 'aliens landed at Roswell') so not inflaming terrorists wins on the cost/benefit ratio.
